The Algarve

Portugal's most important tourist region and further south of Continental Portugal. The name Algarve comes from the Arabic word "Al-Gharb" (the West), culture that lasted for six centuries in the area, leaving numerous traces and influenced their customs, traditions and gastronomy to this day.

 

The administrative capital of the province of Algarve is Faro and altogether there are 16 municipalities in the same-the farther south of Portugal: Albufeira, Alcoutim, Aljezur, Castro Marim, Faro, Lagoa, Lagos, Loulé, Monchique, Olhão, Portimão, São Brás de Alportel, Silves, Tavira, Vila do Bispo and Vila Real de Santo António.

The Algarve is separated from the Alentejo and the rest of the country by the mountains of Monchique and Caldeirão, and is divided into two areas, Sotavento (Eastern zone) and Windward (Western zone).

Climate

The climate in the Algarve has Mediterranean characteristics with mild winters and scorching Summers and dry (the average temperature of the air is between 12.2° in winter (January) and 30 degrees Celsius in the summer (August), with annual thermal amplitude, short and small rainfall and lower temperatures zones zones the Sierras. The sea water temperature oscillates between 14.3° in January and 21.3° in September. In terms of solar time, the Algarve enjoys anything like 3,065 hours of sunshine during the 365 days of the year.

Economy

Algarve's economy is based on agricultural life, with importance assigned to the harvest and marketing of dried fruit, citrus and vegetables.
